Notice how many young children seem more interested in the wrapping that their gifts come in than the actual gift? Let’s go with that…
Materials:
YouTube and a box! Optional: scissors, glue, paint, crayons or markers and other items to decorate.
Main Learning Outcomes:
Developing fine motor skills, creativity and early literacy skills.
Steps:
(1) First, relax together with your child to read the story, “Not a Box” by Antoinette Portis. If you don’t have the book at home, you can listen to it by following this link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jxWTW7ocmTA
(2) This activity is 100% up to you and your child to create! We have included some ideas, and there are more that you can take from the story. Whether you have a big box or some smaller ones (or both), see what your child’s mind can imagine and go with it!
Tips:
This can be as elaborate or as simple as you’d like. Maybe it’s just as simple as a box, like in the book. But maybe you want to colour, cut or glue. This activity is for children of all ages!
