Active Start @ Home - 'Just a Box!'

Notice how many young children seem more interested in the wrapping that their gifts come in than the actual gift? Let’s go with that…

YouTube and a box! Optional: scissors, glue, paint, crayons or markers and other items to decorate.

Main Learning Outcomes:

Developing fine motor skills, creativity and early literacy skills.

(1) First, relax together with your child to read the story, “Not a Box” by Antoinette Portis. If you don’t have the book at home, you can listen to it by following this link:

(2) This activity is 100% up to you and your child to create! We have included some ideas, and there are more that you can take from the story. Whether you have a big box or some smaller ones (or both), see what your child’s mind can imagine and go with it!

This can be as elaborate or as simple as you’d like. Maybe it’s just as simple as a box, like in the book. But maybe you want to colour, cut or glue. This activity is for children of all ages!
