Ready for another messy art project?!
Materials: YouTube, black construction paper or cardstock, white pencil crayon or crayon, white paint, flour, an old container and a bottle cap.
Main Learning Outcomes: Developing fine motor skills, sensory exploration and creativity, and early literacy.
Steps:
(1) First, cuddle up together with your child to read the story, “Goodnight Moon”, by Margaret Wise Brown. If you don’t have the book at home, you can listen to it by following this link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bSXabXauo6w
(2) Now let’s make a moon, full of “rocks” and “craters”. Start by squirting some paint into your container, and slowly add flour until you get a good, thick consistency (and let your little helper stir it up). When the “moon paint” is the consistency that you want, fill in a circle on the black paper with THICK paint. The more the better! Use a variety of bottle caps to make craters – as many or as few as you like. While it dries, add some stars and other space objects with the white pencil crayon, to make it extra spacey!
Tips: This could become messy, especially with the younger ones, so I suggest using newspaper to cover the surface and not wearing your best clothes. It will also take some time to dry. For younger children, they might find more fun in this activity with the process, rather than the outcome. I encourage you to let your child run with it and just have fun!
