OUR APPROACH · CURRICULUM
How children learn at Active Start
Montessori-inspired · Alberta FLIGHT Framework · play-based inquiry
An integrated curriculum that draws from Montessori and Alberta's FLIGHT framework — thoughtfully woven together with play-based, emergent, inquiry-based, and school-readiness philosophies. We grow the whole child: mind, body, and heart
DEVELOPMENT DOMAINS
We grow the whole child
Educators observe, set individualized goals, and scaffold next steps across six developmental domains — sharing progress with families along the way.
DOMAIN 01
Well-Being
Emotional health, positive self-identity, and healthy habits that give children the confidence and resilience to thrive.
DOMAIN 02
Communication & Literacy
Language development, storytelling, vocabulary growth, and early reading and writing foundations across all ages.
DOMAIN 03
Social Responsibility
Empathy, community belonging, inclusive practices, and caring peer relationships — learning to be a thoughtful member of the group.
DOMAIN 04
Exploration & Problem-Solving
Imagination, creativity, flexible thinking, and hands-on discovery — children investigate, experiment, and bring their ideas to life.
DOMAIN 05
Kindergarten Readiness
Early numeracy, foundational literacy, self-regulation, and executive function skills that prepare children for the transition ahead.
DOMAIN 06
Sense of Belonging
Respectful relationships, cultural identity, and a strong sense of place — children grow confident knowing they are valued and understood.
LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS
Spaces designed for discovery
From sensory and art studios to STEM discovery centres and active play spaces, our environments invite children to choose their own path through the day.
Sensory & Art Studios
Open-ended art materials, natural items, playdough, water, sand, and texture tools that invite hands-on creation and creative expression at every age.
Discovery & STEM Centres
Loose parts, building challenges, and educator-designed provocations that spark curiosity, engineering thinking, and collaborative problem-solving.
Active Play Spaces
Indoor gym equipment and outdoor environments that build gross motor skills, agility, and endurance — extending the classroom learning outside.
