Let’s make a window decoration for our neighbours to enjoy…
Materials: YouTube, wax paper, scissors, glue (white glue or hot glue), crayons, crayon/pencil sharpener, iron and construction paper, cardstock or popsicle sticks.
Main Learning Outcomes: Developing fine motor skills, creativity and early literacy.
Steps:
(1) First, gather together with your child to read the story, “The Day the Crayons Quit”, by Drew Daywalt. If you don’t have the book at home, you can listen to it by following this link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HGUxYZMOVAA
(2). Glue craft sticks into square or triangular frames. (Use hot glue to save time). If you prefer a paper frame, cut out a frame from paper with each side the approximate length of a popsicle stick. Sharpen some crayons onto a plate or sheet of paper, so you have a nice pile of colours. Lay an old towel on a flat surface and cover it with a sheet of wax paper. Arrange the frame on the wax paper and drop bits of crayon inside the frames. Remove the frame. Cover with another sheet of wax paper. Carefully run an iron (set to low), across the paper, watching the crayon shavings melt as you go. When everything has cooled, glue the frames onto the wax paper (you can use hot glue to speed things up). Trim around the edges of the frame to reveal your sun catcher.
Tips: Children will need assistance with this activity, especially with the iron. But let them have fun choosing their colours, sharpening, and designing their shavings on the wax paper. If you want to make several at the same time, you can arrange them on the wax paper at the same time to save time.
