Here is a throwback to another classic children’s book…
Materials: YouTube, cereal box or construction paper, tape, string or elastic cord and markers, paint, etc.
Main Learning Outcomes: Developing fine motor skills, creativity and early literacy.
Steps:
(1) First, gather together with your child to read the story, “Where the Wild Things Are”, by Maurice Sendak. If you don’t have the book at home, you can listen to it by following this link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ALmNPxNehYE
(2). Let’s make a crown like Max wore! First, cut open the cereal box and flattened it out (or use construction paper or another thin box you have available). Then measure out as many 2.5 inch triangles would fit across the length of the flattened cereal box (six) and cut out that shape, making sure to leave a long base if you want a tall lofty crown. Leave a short base if you want a short narrow crown. Then fold the crown between each spike and wrapped it into a circle to be secured with a piece of duct tape. Then it’s time to decorate with paint, markers, stickers, or whatever you want! After the crown is dry (if painted), punch a hole in each side, threading the string through the holes and then tie it under our little monster’s chin.
